Diode-Pumped Ceramic Reflectors

INNOVACERA manufactures porous alumina ceramic reflectors for diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) laser assemblies, particularly side-pumped structures in which multiple diode groups are arranged around a laser rod.The ceramic reflector forms part of the optical pump cavity, providing a stable ceramic structure around the laser rod and diode arrangement.

How Ceramic Reflectors Function in Side-Pumped DPSS Lasers

In a side-pumped DPSS laser, diode groups deliver pump energy toward the laser rod from several positions around its circumference. The ceramic reflector surrounds this pump region and helps redirect light that is not absorbed on its first pass back toward the gain medium. Its geometry therefore works together with the laser-rod position, diode arrangement and optical openings.

Porous alumina provides broad diffuse reflection through its ceramic microstructure while also offering electrical insulation and dimensional stability. These characteristics make it suitable for compact pump-head assemblies where optical, mechanical and electrical functions must coexist around the laser rod.

The ceramic reflector can therefore be configured in different cross sections and assembly forms to match the pump architecture and available installation space.

Structure Typical Product Configuration
Circular / round reflector A cylindrical reflector body surrounding the laser rod for generally symmetric pump arrangements.
Triangular reflector A multi-face ceramic cavity that can correspond to diode placement around several sides of the rod.
Plate-style reflector Individual ceramic plates or layered sections assembled around the pump region.
Segmented reflector Multiple ceramic pieces used where diode access, assembly sequence or pump-head construction favors a split structure.
Custom geometry Project-specific cavity, openings and interfaces developed around the diode package, laser rod, cooling and mounting arrangement.

Applications

Typical applications include side-pumped DPSS laser systems used in industrial, medical, laboratory and OEM laser equipment. Typical use cases include:
• Side-pumped Nd:YAG and other solid-state laser sources
• Industrial DPSS laser modules requiring compact rod/diode alignment
• Medical DPSS laser modules with application-specific pump-head structures
• Laboratory and OEM laser development for prototype pump-head assemblies

Porous Alumina Reflector Material

These reflectors can be manufactured from high-purity porous alumina reflector material used in other INNOVACERA laser cavities. Reference material data include approximately 99% Al₂O₃, 22% nominal porosity, 97.8% reflectance at 1000 nm and reflectance above 96% across 500–2000 nm. These are reference values; optical validation should be based on the project wavelength, diode source and assembled cavity geometry.

Glazing & Surface Configuration

A diode-pumped reflector can contain exposed optical surfaces as well as assembly faces, apertures and regions close to cooling or mounting components. Depending on the pump-head design, the ceramic can be supplied unglazed, glazed or selectively glazed. Selective glazing is useful when defined optical zones need to retain the porous ceramic surface while other areas require pore sealing or easier cleaning and contamination control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Use Porous Alumina Reflectors in Side-Pumped Lasers? How Do They Enhance Pumping Efficiency?

In side-pumped DPSS lasers, metallic specular cavities often cause non-uniform rod absorption, localized hot spots, and reflectivity loss under cooling fluids. INNOVACERA’s porous alumina ceramic reflectors deliver over 97.8% diffuse reflectivity at 1000 nm and >96% across the 500–2000 nm spectrum. The micro-porous matrix homogenizes multi-pass pump photons across Nd:YAG laser rods, drastically improving optical conversion efficiency while maintaining excellent dielectric isolation and dimensional stability.

Need Complex Pump-Head Geometries or Selective Glazing? How to Order Custom Ceramic Cavities from INNOVACERA?

To fit diverse laser diode groupings and cooling manifold designs, INNOVACERA enables customers to custom porous alumina reflectors into round, triangular, segmented, or multi-plate configurations. We also apply high-precision selective glazing to seal non-optical mounting surfaces against coolant penetration while keeping the porous diffuse area exposed. Simply submit your diode arrangement, rod diameter, and pump-head CAD drawings for prototyping and volume production.
