Hexagonal Boron Nitride Ceramic for Metal Refining and Molten Metal Handling

Hexagonal Boron Nitride ceramic (short for BN) plays an important role in metals refining due to its non wet to molten metal and high electrical insulation, at the same time it can endure the high temperature and corrosion environment. BN can effectively solve the problems of easy adhesion and corrosion that traditional materials face when touch with molten metals.

In metal refining industry, BN is used as key components to transport liquid molten metal, thermal protecting tube, and insulating parts in furnace.

key components to transport liquid molten metal

To ensure the smooth metal flow in metal refining industry, the transfer tube’s material must be not wet at the same time not reaction with the molten metal such as aluminium, copper, steel, titanium and zirconium. BN’s non-wetting and extreme corrosion resistance makes it an ideal choice.

Thermal protecting tube and insulating parts in furnace

At vacuum environment and with inactive gas, BN can be used at temperatures of approximately 1,750-2,100°C, depending on composition. It is with low thermal expansion and outstanding electrical insulation. So it can be directly used in high temperature furnaces as thermal protecting tube and insulating parts.

FAQ

Hexagonal BN ceramic offers non-wetting properties to molten metals (such as aluminum, copper, titanium, and zirconium), extreme corrosion resistance, and high electrical insulation. It can endure temperatures up to 2,100°C in inactive gas environments, solving adhesion and corrosion issues faced by traditional materials.

Innovacera provides a range of grades including 99% BN, 99.7% BN, and composite versions mixed with SiC, Zirconia, AlN, Alumina, and others. These vary in density (1.6 to 2.9 g/cm³), bending strength (up to 90 MPa), and maximum usage temperatures in vacuum or atmosphere to suit specific industrial needs.
